The USK will introduce new fees (PDF file, German) from 2017 that publishers have to pay to get their game rated by a board of experts. The fastest programm is set to be completely done within 5 work days, the longest takes about 20 work days. Membership cost are also being elevated. You need to be a member of a self-regulating body in Germany to be privileged from investigations from youth protection watch dogs. If members of USK are found to be in violation, USK is informed and they get a stern warning. If you are not a member, you potentially face a hefty fine (50k €).
Since October of this year, self-regulating bodies are also tasked with the approval of technical youth protection measures such as age verification systems and youth protection programms/filters.
